The Compensation Consultant (consultant) is a member of the Compensation and Talent team within the HumanResources Department at Vanderbilt University and is a key individualcontributor responsible for supporting the compensation team and programs byproviding data analysis and overseeing data integrity. The consultant assistswith the full range of the university's compensation programs. The consultantworks with Human Resources consultants, talent consultants, internal/externalentities requesting data, and with campus stakeholders.
The consultant assists with the development, implementation,analysis, and monitoring for the effectiveness of new and revised compensation changes,participation in data collection and survey administration, and other work in supportof the university's philosophy, goals and competitive market practices.
About the Work Unit
The compensation team is a specialized area within the office of human resources dedicated to internal compensation and classification consulting, job analysis, pay data collection and evaluation, pay structures, organizational structures, job classifications, market competitiveness and compliance. Compensation administers the university's staff pay program and provides data-driven consulting services to make informed decisions regarding employee pay. Compensation works to ensure that standard and consistent practices foster a compensation culture that complies with all local, state, federal and applicable statutes and regulations and the university's policies and procedures are applied.
Expected Performance and Outcomes
Builds and maintains strong working relationships with departmental stakeholders and centralized HR team members; ensures that inquiries and concerns are handled quickly, appropriately, and with a courteous resolution.
Supports compensation functions by preparing spreadsheets, analyzing data and interpreting results; reporting issues to the compensation team and recommending solutions; maintains documentation for audit purposes; demonstrates expertise relative to compensation practices and programs and delivers services that meet and exceed departmental needs.
Ensures compensation programs are properly administered by reviewing and analyzing materials including but not limited to position descriptions for level and classification; checking for market relevance and as appropriate internal equity; documenting validated information or recommendations for change to individual positions.
Monitors the effectiveness of existing compensation resources and projects; assists with developing recommended revisions and improvements as necessary; maintains job categorization of positions across the University.
Provides analysis for pay decisions, policy, and guideline interpretation and job evaluations; provides deliverables with an awareness of and urgency around meeting deadlines, understanding impacts on staff and departments, and with providing exemplar customer service.
Participates in salary surveys to ensure that compensation programs are competitive with the external market.
Gets the job done; accepts responsibility; addresses problems rather than allowing unresolved issues to fester; models willingness to contribute above and beyond the call of duty; models intrinsic integrity and excellent professional judgment while exhibiting unquestioned discretion with highly sensitive and confidential information. Maintains position descriptions and provides guidance on new and existing positions to appropriate constituents.
Answers routine questions from HR colleagues on the talent and HR teams regarding compensation procedures and policies, and other HR-related topics. Has access to, and accountability for, extremely sensitive/confidential information about employees; treats the information with unquestioned confidence and discretion, and never inappropriately releases or shares such information.
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility but may serve in a lead capacity to others on the compensation team; reports administratively to the Executive Director, Compensation and Talent.
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
Professional certification in human resources or compensation is preferred.
Three to five years of relevant professional experience is necessary.
Demonstrable experience utilizing Microsoft Excel, including the creation of v-lookups and pivot tables is strongly preferred.
Experience with data analysis and interpretation is strongly preferred.
Experience with research and data mining is strongly preferred.
Relevant experience or coursework in Compensation, Human Resources and Benefits, or Business/Finance/Math is strongly preferred.
Strong customer services skills and a problem-solving attitude is necessary.
Demonstrable communication skills, both verbally and in writing is preferred; an ability to effective collaborate with HR colleagues and campus customers is necessary.
Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community is strongly preferred.
